Hello, my name is Lucy Mumford and I am delighted to own the Barking Mad franchise which covers Exeter, Mid and East Devon.
I live in a 360 year old cottage in the beautiful village of Rawridge with my partner Paul, daughter Georgia, two cats Sniff and Rabbit and my gorgeous newfoundland dog Stanley. I have lived here for 3 years and in East Devon since my childhood, having a real love of the area, the countryside and the way of life.
Having been a teacher for ten years, I began to find that the demands of the profession were increasing and placing more and more stress into my life. Combined with having suffered a major health issue, I realised that my life had to change. And then it happened - I saw an ad for Barking Mad! Initially it was as an employee but very soon I had the opportunity to buy the franchise; and why wouldn't I? It offered me my own business with a network of support (working with dogs – a passion in my life), flexibility, challenge, working from home but being able to get out and about to meet people and most importantly more time with my dog, Stanley.
So, if you are looking for a home from home experience for your dog, let me introduce you to the excellent service that Barking Mad offers enabling both you and your dog to have a fantastic holiday.
If you are thinking that your life is little empty without a dog in your life but you feel that maybe taking one on permanently might be a little too much then how about becoming a host - a wonderful role, sharing your love, expertise and care without having the full time commitment.
I do look forward to meeting you soon to share with you the wonderful world of Barking Mad.
We're delighted to provide our service in the following towns and surrounding areas:
- Ottery St Mary
- Budleigh Salterton

Belle our 4 year old Dally has just returned from yet another holiday on someone else's sofa!!
We have used Barking Mad ever since she was a puppy and also with our previous Dally over the last 10-12 years or more.
We have never had a bad experience and our dogs always look forward to their holidays and are very happy when they come home so we know that the right fosterers have been chosen for them .
We would recommend BM to anyone and believe it is much better than kennels.
We have used BM for many years, often four to five times pa. We have seen three different owners to the local franchise and all have been first class, obviously the selection and training process works well. Tilly our black lab gets so excited when the BM car turns up to take her away on her hols. She runs out and jumps in the back without any prompting. This has to be the best accolade to BM.
As soon as Tilly knows she is going on holiday with BM she waits by the window. As soon as she hears the car she gets very excited. She is out the door and in the back of the car before you can say goodbye. Its very reassuring to know she is so happy. She is just back from her 6th holiday in 2013.
Charlie returned from his "second holiday" at Barking Mad looking happy and healthy and totally relaxed ......... what a difference to when I picked him up from kennels before I started using BM. From now on, when I book my holiday, I book Charlies!!!! Thank you very much. Helen
My two have just come back from their stay with Barking Mad and as usual are full of beans. We are always happy to leave them with Steph and the team as we know they will be well cared for.
Thanks to Chris and hosts Penny and Ian for taking such great care of Podge. He came home very happy and so well groomed - his coat was gleaming - he had obviously been pampered!
As always, very efficient, make you feel comfortable that your dog will be looked after well. Always returns happy, never traumatised. The dog has a great time, no need to worry.

Jaffa seemed to enjoy her week-end away, she has got that many peculiar traits, that it is good to know that she settled in with her "carers" Sam & Vic.The note they sent back with Jaffa put our minds at rest.so please thank them.We hope she will go back to them in July.
Hello to both my existing customers and hosts and to all you lovely people who are looking at what Barking Mad has to offer.
I have had a fantastic introduction into the world of Barking Mad. I have met host families who provide warm, loving homes to our ‘holidaying’ dogs and customers who have happily sent their wonderful dogs off on holiday to stay with our amazing host families.
Currently I have been learning how to use Facebook (Barking Mad Stanley)and Twitter (Barking Mad Dog Care @barkingmadLucy) so that I can communicate with you all in even more ways. It’s not coming naturally but when I conquer it then ‘the world is my oyster’ as they say!
My news each month will always have a little piece from my gorgeous Newfoundland puppy, Stanley.
"Hi everyone, I think it’s great what my mum does. She comes home each day and I get to learn so much about other doggies through the smells I can sniff on her clothes. I can’t wait to meet you all. I shall keep mum company when she goes to shows. I will keep you updated on the shows that we are going to do. See you soon."
April and May 2014
I would like to dedicate my Spring news to say a heartfelt thank you and goodbye to some of our Barking Mad long standing customers who are no longer with us. In particular, a special mention for Felix the Golden Retriever who enjoyed many Barking Mad holidays with us, staying with 5 different host families over the years who all really loved him. He nearly made his 16 birthday – he was a gentleman of a dog and he will be greatly missed.
We have also welcomed some new young puppies to the world of Barking Mad in April and they have experienced exciting new adventures during their first time being away from home and are keen to do it all again!
All my host families are starting to get booked for the summer month’s now so if you would like your dog to stay with a particular host – get in touch quick!
Well at last the weather seems to be improving a bit and people are starting to think about holidays so bookings for Barking Mad are coming in for the spring and summer. If you have a favourite host family for you dog remember to book early to avoid disappointment as they say!
Barking Mad Exeter and Mid Devon are looking forward to attending the Bicton College Lambing Event on Sunday 16th March 14. We will have a stand and are sponsoring the family dog show by awarding the prizes for Champion Dog, Reserve Dog, and the best ‘Have a Go’ Dog! It would be great to see people there, and we will be happy to chat about the Barking Mad service for customers and advise what is involved in being a host.
Barking Mad Exeter has been able to start the new near with gusto - we have had new hosts join us from Seaton, Sidmouth, Tiverton, Tedburn St Mary and Alphington as well as new customers from these areas too. It has been a real pleasure to meet all our new recruits and make the perfect matches for dogs to enjoy stress free holidays!
Booking your holidays well in advance enables you and your dog to book with their favourite host family and if they are not free it gives you extra time to choose a new family, where once again your dog would be welcomed into a warm, loving home environment and experience some new walking venues perhaps?
We are well into the run up to Christmas now with less than a week to go, so the dogs who are going to be on their holidays over and Christmas and New Year are looking forward to getting their doggie stockings from their host families!
All Christmas and New Year slots are now fully booked up so looking forward to taking bookings for 2014 and beyond. If you book your holidays before the 31st Jan 14 the special offer applies and prices will be at the current rates of £20 per day for one dog and £40 per day for two.
Remember if you or anyone you know would like to become a Barking Mad host family give me a call. Maybe after over indulging during the festive period instead of signing up to the gym you could look after a dog instead and go on lovely long invigorating walks – it’s free!!!
Best wishes and see you on the other side in 2014!
I have now completed my first month of running Barking Mad Exeter and what a great time it has been!
I have met the host families who have been giving wonderful holidays to dogs in this area for a number of years and would like to say a big thank you for their continued support as well as a few congratulations on meeting a number of mile stones! John & Elsie and Linda have hosted for 10 years, Sam & Vincent and Sue 9 years, and Sally & Michael and Barbara 5 years. All the host families clearly love what they do and are very experienced and dedicated to their role of 5* doggie holiday provision!
I have also taken on 4 lovely ladies as new hosts, Rhiannon, Emma, Julie and Kim. Rhiannon and Emma live in Tiverton, Julie is in Sidmouth and Kim in Seaton. The ladies are passionate about dogs and their welfare and are very much looking forward to meeting and looking after all sorts of breeds of dogs in their dog friendly homes.
I would like to say a big thank you to all the existing customers in the Exeter and Mid Devon area too – again I have had the chance to meet a number of them and their gorgeous dogs. I am about to send out an email newsletter as well as a posted communication so I can make sure that I have everyone’s up to date contact details. Just as a little reminder, any customers who recommend a new host or customer who subsequently join the team or book a holiday get sent a reward – a voucher or one days free boarding with Barking Mad.
Look out for my next up date in December, and in the meantime hope you can keep warm in these chilly times and good luck with getting ready for Christmas!
