Lucy Mumford

Hello, my name is Lucy Mumford and I am delighted to own the Barking Mad franchise which covers Exeter, Mid and East Devon.

I live in a 360 year old cottage in the beautiful village of Rawridge with my partner Paul, daughter Georgia, two cats Sniff and Rabbit and my gorgeous newfoundland dog Stanley. I have lived here for 3 years and in East Devon since my childhood, having a real love of the area, the countryside and the way of life.

Having been a teacher for ten years, I began to find that the demands of the profession were increasing and placing more and more stress into my life. Combined with having suffered a major health issue, I realised that my life had to change. And then it happened - I saw an ad for Barking Mad! Initially it was as an employee but very soon I had the opportunity to buy the franchise; and why wouldn't I? It offered me my own business with a network of support (working with dogs – a passion in my life), flexibility, challenge, working from home but being able to get out and about to meet people and most importantly more time with my dog, Stanley.

So, if you are looking for a home from home experience for your dog, let me introduce you to the excellent service that Barking Mad offers enabling both you and your dog to have a fantastic holiday.

If you are thinking that your life is  little empty without a dog in your life but you feel that maybe taking one on permanently might be a little too much then how about becoming a host - a wonderful role, sharing your love, expertise and care without having the full time commitment.

I do look forward to meeting you soon to share with you the wonderful world of Barking Mad.

Happy dog

I am so glad I found Lucy and the wonderful service she provides at Barking Mad. I lead a very busy life and have to leave my beloved Bella on numerous occasions. Knowing that she is left with loving and attentive families that understand Bella's needs is a huge relief and i'm always greeted by a happy and content dog on my return. Lucy always goes the extra mile in providing Bella with a safe, secure and caring environment whilst I am away and I cannot thank her enough. I would not hesitate in recommending Lucy and Barking Mad to anyone who has to leave their beloved dog whilst away from home.

Thanks again for arranging Monty's latest holiday. We can always be sure that he will have a happy stay away from us and know that we don't need to worry about him. It is a shame that he had his little accident on his last stay with Linda but we are so grateful that you have been able to arrange the lovely alternative for him. He has had no accidents since he came home! We look forward to seeing you soon, Lucy and we know Monty will be happy with your mum.

BM is a fantastic service and my dogs are always happy and extremely well cared for. I know that I can go away without having to worry about them at all and that they will come home with shiny coats and wagging tail and a wonderful record of all that they have done.

How pleased we are that we have found Barking Mad.We had a wedding to go to just before Christmas and were unable to take our rescue dog, in the year we had owned her she had proven to be a loyal loving dog and we were very loathe to put her in kennels in case she thought she had been abandoned again. Lucy came to our rescue and assured us that Doris would be well looked after and loved, as all her foster "mums" treated their charges as though they were their own. Lucy met Doris a few weeks before, to take details of Doris's daily routine, and to find a well matched carer for her, and she proved to be so right for our dog and Doris certainly appeared to have had a lovely holiday. We will certainly have no hesitation in the future about using Barking Mad again.

BM offers and delivers a five star service. As we suffer with separation anxiety from our dog, BM is the best fit for us. We are able to request the same host Auntie Nettie who is fabulous! We would schedule our next holiday around Auntie Nettie's schedule just to have peace of mind while we are away. Lucy is very caring and kept us updated as needed. We highly recommend BM. We wouldn't use any other services to look after our best little friend.

We couldn't be happier with the service provided by Barking Mad. We love how happy and content our dog is when she leaves and returns so we know she is being well looked after.

Lucy is always quick to respond to dates requested and has been a pleasure to meet.

It was the first time we used Barking dog so we were nervous. Lucy put our minds at rest and on Milo's return it was great to have a letter from the host outlining very honestly how he'd got on. Because it was clear she'd loved having him and he had settled quickly we feel confident about using the service again.

Belle our 4 year old Dally has just returned from yet another holiday on someone else's sofa!!
We have used Barking Mad ever since she was a puppy and also with our previous Dally over the last 10-12 years or more.
We have never had a bad experience and our dogs always look forward to their holidays and are very happy when they come home so we know that the right fosterers have been chosen for them .
We would recommend BM to anyone and believe it is much better than kennels.

We have used BM for many years, often four to five times pa. We have seen three different owners to the local franchise and all have been first class, obviously the selection and training process works well. Tilly our black lab gets so excited when the BM car turns up to take her away on her hols. She runs out and jumps in the back without any prompting. This has to be the best accolade to BM.

As soon as Tilly knows she is going on holiday with BM she waits by the window. As soon as she hears the car she gets very excited. She is out the door and in the back of the car before you can say goodbye. Its very reassuring to know she is so happy. She is just back from her 6th holiday in 2013.

Charlie returned from his "second holiday" at Barking Mad looking happy and healthy and totally relaxed ......... what a difference to when I picked him up from kennels before I started using BM. From now on, when I book my holiday, I book Charlies!!!! Thank you very much. Helen

My two have just come back from their stay with Barking Mad and as usual are full of beans. We are always happy to leave them with Steph and the team as we know they will be well cared for.

Thanks to Chris and hosts Penny and Ian for taking such great care of Podge. He came home very happy and so well groomed - his coat was gleaming - he had obviously been pampered!

As always, very efficient, make you feel comfortable that your dog will be looked after well. Always returns happy, never traumatised. The dog has a great time, no need to worry.

Jaffa seemed to enjoy her week-end away, she has got that many peculiar traits, that it is good to know that she settled in with her "carers" Sam & Vic.The note they sent back with Jaffa put our minds at rest.so please thank them.We hope she will go back to them in July.

My News

February 2015

Well what a start to 2015! I have had several new customer registrations and have signed up two new hosts. The first of these was very spontaneous – I had someone tap me on my shoulder as I was shopping in Tesco to look at the ‘Barking Mad’ logo on the front of my jacket and then following a short conversation I arranged to visit them and hey presto they have become very active hosts. So thank you Alan and Jessie for taking the plunge and asking that question. If you see me out and about then please do not hesitate to stop me and ask! Just a few interesting facts about hosting – the service is fully insured; you get 24 hour support; the dogs are matched carefully to each host.

As we move forward into the year, time soon begins to rush by so if you have holidays planned later in the year, think about the needs of your dog. Contact me, register your dog and book them in so that you have peace of mind as you book your own holiday that your dog will be having a fab holiday of their own!

1.jpgHello Everyone, Stanley here. I just wanted to introduce you to my mate Boris! He has been sitting on my mum’s desk for ages watching how the business works. But now he wants to get out and see the big wide world. We have been having a chat and think that it would be a good idea to do a bit of a trade. My mum looks after your dog and you look after hers. You can take Boris on holiday so that you don’t miss your dog too much. Give him lots of cuddles, he will like that. Take some photos of him on holiday and you can send them to mum just like she does with your dogs. So, if you like our idea then please let mum know when you book that you would like to give Boris a holiday too! X

December 2014

Host_party.jpgFestive greetings to you all! Well, what an eventful couple of months it has been. I have been out and about meeting and greeting both hosts and customers and boy do I have some lovely hosts and customers. I am constantly amazed at how my hosts will go that extra mile for the dogs that stay in their care. Having met lots of my customers, I thank you for your endless patience as I become more proficient at my role

At the beginning of December I held a host party at St Bridget Nurseries. We sat and enjoyed bacon butties, teacakes and tea and coffee, There were plenty of opportunities to share experiences and have a laugh. I unveiled the new display board that will be taken to shows and markets. There are many of their happy, smiley faces on there, along with some of the many dogs that I have had the pleasure of taking to these wonderful host families for their holidays.

If you are interested in becoming a host yourself then please don’t hesitate to contact me for a chat.

Just a quick reminder, I am still offering half price transportation charge if you book your dog’s holiday by 11th January 2015.

And finally, I wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy and Peaceful New Year x

“Well, she nearly forgot to let me have my say - Stanley here! Oh I have had such fun recently. I am allowed to go off lead now and my favourite thing is to ‘puddle surf’ I love it. I find the longest puddle, build up speed, head down and run the full length of it with spray flying out either side. When I get tired I then lie down in the middle of the puddle. Mum really loves me when I get muddy in those puddles! I love her too when she gives me a bath after x I can’t wait till next year when the shows start and I get to meet lots of other doggies; some of the smells in the car are fantastic . . . I wonder which dog I will meet first?!!”

September 2014

Hello to both my existing customers and hosts and to all you lovely people who are looking at what Barking Mad has to offer.
I have had a fantastic introduction into the world of Barking Mad. I have met host families who provide warm, loving homes to our ‘holidaying’ dogs and customers who have happily sent their wonderful dogs off on holiday to stay with our amazing host families.
Currently I have been learning how to use Facebook (Barking Mad Stanley)and Twitter (Barking Mad Dog Care @barkingmadLucy) so that I can communicate with you all in even more ways. It’s not coming naturally but when I conquer it then ‘the world is my oyster’ as they say!

Stanley.jpgMy news each month will always have a little piece from my gorgeous Newfoundland puppy, Stanley.
"Hi everyone, I think it’s great what my mum does. She comes home each day and I get to learn so much about other doggies through the smells I can sniff on her clothes. I can’t wait to meet you all. I shall keep mum company when she goes to shows. I will keep you updated on the shows that we are going to do. See you soon."

April and May 2014

I would like to dedicate my Spring news to say a heartfelt thank you and goodbye to some of our Barking Mad long standing customers who are no longer with us. In particular, a special mention for Felix the Golden Retriever who enjoyed many Barking Mad holidays with us, staying with 5 different host families over the years who all really loved him. He nearly made his 16 birthday – he was a gentleman of a dog and he will be greatly missed.

We have also welcomed some new young puppies to the world of Barking Mad in April and they have experienced exciting new adventures during  their first time being away from home and are keen to do it all again!

All my host families are starting to get booked for the summer month’s now so if you would like your dog to stay with a particular host – get in touch quick!

February/March 2014

Well at last the weather seems to be improving a bit and people are starting to think about holidays so bookings for Barking Mad are coming in for the spring and summer. If you have a favourite host family for you dog remember to book early to avoid disappointment as they say!

Barking Mad Exeter and Mid Devon are looking forward to attending the Bicton College Lambing Event on Sunday 16th March 14. We will have a stand and are sponsoring the family dog show by awarding the prizes for Champion Dog, Reserve Dog, and the best ‘Have a Go’ Dog! It would be great to see people there, and we will be happy to chat about the Barking Mad service for customers and advise what is involved in being a host.

January 2014

Barking Mad Exeter has been able to start the new near with gusto  - we have had new hosts join us from Seaton, Sidmouth, Tiverton, Tedburn St Mary and Alphington as well as new customers from these areas too. It has been a real pleasure to meet all our new recruits and make the perfect matches for dogs to enjoy stress free holidays!

Booking your holidays well in advance enables you and your dog to book with their favourite host family and if they are not free it gives you extra time to choose a new family, where once again your dog would be welcomed into a warm, loving home environment and experience some new walking venues perhaps?

December 2013

Christmas Greetings!

We are well into the run up to Christmas now with less than a week to go, so the dogs who are going to be on their holidays over and Christmas and New Year are looking forward to getting their doggie stockings from their host families!

All Christmas and New Year slots are now fully booked up so looking forward to taking bookings for 2014 and beyond. If you book your holidays before the 31st Jan 14 the special offer applies and prices will be at the current rates of £20 per day for one dog and £40 per day for two.

Remember if you or anyone you know would like to become a Barking Mad host family give me a call. Maybe after over indulging during the festive period instead of signing up to the gym you could look after a dog instead and go on lovely long invigorating walks – it’s free!!!

Best wishes and see you on the other side in 2014!

November 2013

I have now completed my first month of running Barking Mad Exeter and what a great time it has been!

I have met the host families who have been giving wonderful holidays to dogs in this area for a number of years and would like to say a big thank you for their continued support as well as a few congratulations on meeting a number of mile stones! John & Elsie and Linda have hosted for 10 years, Sam & Vincent and Sue 9 years, and Sally & Michael and Barbara 5 years. All the host families clearly love what they do and are very experienced and dedicated to their role of 5* doggie holiday provision!

I have also taken on 4 lovely ladies as new hosts, Rhiannon, Emma, Julie and Kim. Rhiannon and Emma live in Tiverton, Julie is in Sidmouth and Kim in Seaton. The ladies are passionate about dogs and their welfare and are very much looking forward to meeting and looking after all sorts of breeds of dogs in their dog friendly homes.

I would like to say a big thank you to all the existing customers in the Exeter and Mid Devon area too – again I have had the chance to meet a number of them and their gorgeous dogs. I am about to send out an email newsletter as well as a posted communication so I can make sure that I have everyone’s up to date contact details. Just as a little reminder, any customers who recommend a new host or customer who subsequently join the team or book a holiday get sent a reward – a voucher or one days free boarding with Barking Mad.

Look out for my next up date in December, and in the meantime hope you can keep warm in these chilly times and good luck with getting ready for Christmas!
