Puppies! We all love them with their cute little faces and oh, so soft coats... But what is the best way to prepare your puppy for your holidays? Understandably, people are often anxious about going away with out their fur-baby and unsure how s/he will react to being away from home for the first time.
Here are Barking Mad we can offer your puppy the ideal home boarding experience which is clearly the better alternative to kennels. Our dog holidays are tailored to your puppy's needs and s/he will be cared for in a loving host family home. We guarantee that they will be the only doggy guest for the duration of their stay. This means you don't have to worry about your dog multi-boarding with several other unknown, adult dogs, which can be the overwhelming experience facing puppies when they stay with other pet sitters. Our hosts are all based at home ensuring that your puppy is safe, happy and receiving all the fuss and attention they need.
When we first meet you we document in detail all your puppy's care needs and with our Lifetime Registration their care notes will be updated as they grow and as many times as is needed. This is all carried out free of charge as part of the one-off initial registration fee and our hosts carefully follow the information provided during your puppy's holiday.
When you are planning your own holidays it's always a good idea to plan ahead for your puppy. Make sure you register them in good time and allow enough time for a short taster stay of two nights/three days before your main holiday if this is longer than 6 days. This is the gentle way to introduce your puppy to dog boarding and spending time away from you: long enough for them to settle but short enough to avoid any stress.
Do make sure your puppy is largely house-trained before your first holiday or their taster stay. We fully expect one or two little accidents with the newness of the experience but a good grounding in toilet training means everyone is more relaxed. Introducing your puppy to a crate is also a very important. Puppies feel secure in their special place which can easily be transported to their host's home. In addition, crates allow our hosts to ensure that your puppy has enough rest - like toddlers a hyped-up puppy often needs a nap! Finally, you don't have to worry that your puppy is chewing their host's coffee table whilst they are putting the laundry away or doing some other chore as they can be safely popped in their crate when they can't be directly supervised.
With a little planning from you and our bespoke dog boarding service the worry about your puppy's first stay away from home can be dispelled. S/he will have a holiday every bit as good as your own and come home waggy-tailed and full of bounce!
We are often asked, "How do you recruit the host families who provide your dog boarding service?" Some people come to us by recommendation and we have a number of customers who also host. We advertise in the press and on social media for people who are looking for a fun hobby that gets them out and about and provides wonderful companionship. However, our favourite method for finding our pet sitters is to meet people face-to-face so we regularly have stands at village shows and fairs as well giving talks to organisations such as the WI. Our most recent experience was a trade stand at Tesco, Kingston Park and the day just flew by - we love to talk Barking Mad to anyone who will listen!
When people hear about our tailored, exclusive dog sitting service we invariably get a "What a great idea!" response. This is just as true for the host experience - people become really enthused when they realise that they can have a part-time dog when it suits them, that their guest pooch is carefully matched to their lifestyle and that they are fully supported and insured by their local Barking Mad franchisee. Hosting suits all sorts of people from retirees to people working from home or working part-time and parents who are home for the school holidays. As long as they are motivated by a genuine love of dogs and can give plenty of time to their four-legged guests we'd love to hear from them - call Carrie on 0191 4147264 or to contact us via the website.

Some of our existing hosts will be there to share their doggy tales so you will quickly get an idea of what a fun and rewarding hobby this is.
Canine First Aid
When you book a dog holiday with Barking Mad Dog Care you can be confident that your dog's welfare is our priority. Our dog sitting service provides a great safety net for your pooch - our hosts look after your dog in a true home-from-home setting and we look after the hosts. Here is our latest group of hosts who have successfully completed a dog first aid course. They had a great day, thanks to Stacy Burleigh of First Aid for Dogs Durham.
Don't we look smart?! Your local Barking Mad team have all taken delivery of their new uniforms with our cheery, sunny logo that perfectly captures the essence of our Dog Holidays.
The car which transports our doggy guests to/from their fabulous host families has had a makeover too so we're all poised and ready for the Spring/Summer season.
Our customers are already telling us that the new look perfectly reflects the great alternative to kennels that dog boarding with Barking Mad is all about.

Our next host event is a free coffee morning at Lintzford Garden Centre, near Rowlands Gill on Weds 29th March, 11am - 1pm. Existing hosts are welcome to drop in a cuppa and we hope that anyone who is contemplating becoming a host will also drop by for an informal chat. The successful applicant will liaise with customers and our host families and transport our lovely guest dogs between the two. You should have good communication skills, a clean driving licence and have owned or had some experience with dogs. The work is year-round but with seasonal peaks; weekend, bank holiday and school holiday cover essential. We envisage 12-20 hours per week in peak season.
Please email firstname.lastname@example.org if you are interested. Closing date for returned applications 17th February 2017
Interested in hosting?
Come and join us at the dog-friendly Sidegate Gallery and Cafe, Gateshead Road, Sunniside, NE16 5LG on Tues 24th January, 1.30-3.30 pm for an informal chat about hosting with local Barking Mad owner/operator, Carrie Jarvis.
Over a cup of tea and a scone Carrie will give you the low-down on how you can enjoy this rewarding hobby.
Our home boarding service is a fabulous alternative to kennels and other pet sitting arrangements that are unable to offer tailored, one-to-one care in a loving home environment.
For hosts this is a perfect way to "borrow a dog" without the risks associated with informal arrangements. We match dogs to your lifestyle and will support you as much as you need. With full insurance cover, free canine first aid training and optional social opportunities with fellow hosts this is a great opportunity for people who are unable to or don't wish to make the commitment to full-time dog ownership. However, if you're dog-dotty and own up to two well socialised dogs you're also very welcome. We hope to see you at Sidegate!
It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas here at Barking Mad! On 4th December we had our annual host Christmas party at No.19, the golf club, at Close House, Wylam, Northumberland. As you can see from the photos, this is a wonderful venue with gorgeous views from the club house. We were really well looked after by chef, Craig, and the front of house team and had a superb afternoon tea. There was a lovely atmosphere as our hosts all relaxed, enjoyed each other's company and shared doggie stories from the last year.
Providing dog boarding through our fantastic team of host families really has the edge over kennels or multi-boarding pet sitters. Our hosts are devoted to their guest dogs and provide true home-boarding in a lovely family environment where the guest dog has their undivided attention. Please do get in touch if you'd like to look after carefully matched dogs for their holidays or are seeking tailored and exclusive care for your dog.
We are very pleased to announce that Lynda Telford has been appointed as our Dog Holiday Co-ordinator. Lynda, who owns Cocker Spaniels, Mr Darcy and Dave, has many years experience of running small businesses. She will be working closely with owner/operator, Carrie, to continue the development of your local Barking Mad branch.
With Lynda's appointment Carrie is looking forward to having more time for host recruitment and support. So saying, here is the latest crop of hosts who have successfully undertaken Canine First Aid training, organised by Carrie. Many thanks to Helen McCann, our admin assistant and owner of Giddy Aunt Mobile Pet Care Services for creating and delivering the workshop which was enjoyed by all. Special thanks, too, to our "Perfect Patients" - Bella, Poppy, Harvey and Freckle!

Barking Mad Newcastle & Tyne Valley scoop national award!
Franchisees from the 75 branches of Barking Mad got together with staff from head office at our annual conference at the end of April. This is always a special time of year when we enjoy meeting up with colleagues in the beautiful surrounds of Lakeside on Lake Windermere.
This year was particularly memorable for local owner-operator, Carrie, as she was awarded "Brand Builder of the Year" by MD, Lee Dancy, who developed the Barking Mad concept back in 2000. Carrie was stunned but delighted to be recognised for her efforts in re-vitalising and developing Barking Mad Newcastle & Tyne Valley since she took over in May 2014.
Carrie is looking forward to taking the business to the next level and has already expanded it to provide an improved transport service and extra admin support for better customer liaison. But at the heart of the business is the simple desire to provide fantastic dog holidays. We are always working to ensure:
Happy dogs - Happy hosts - Happy you!
Look out for Barking Mad Dog Care guests Samson the Springer Spaniel and Archie the Cockerpoo with their host, Sue, on BBC Look North (North East & Cumbria) - she's the lady who talks about the small print behind the budget.
Sue and her husband, Paul, live near Durham but had taken their holiday dogs for a trip to the beach followed by refreshments in the Doggie Diner. Our fantastic hosts really do go out of their way to provide wonderful dog holidays for their guests. You can watch this fantastic report here.
Barking Mad Newcastle & Tyne Valley will be at Gibside, local National Trust property from 11 am on Saturday 12th March for The Great British Dog Walk in aid of Hearing Dogs for Deaf People. Prize Draw Winner!
In January all customers who booked a dog holiday were entered in a free prize draw to win complimentary transport on their booking. I'm pleased to announce that the winners were the owners of little Benji, seen here.
Benji, an adorable Shih Tzu, is having his very first Barking Mad holiday when his owners attend their daughter's wedding. They were very relieved to have found a solution to their dog care worries and told us that they are "over the moon" to be our winners!
Canine First Aid Course
Fifteen of our hosts have completed a Canine First Aid course, organised by Barking Mad Newcastle and Tyne Valley and presented by Helen McCann, Barking Mad Admin Assistant and owner of Giddy Aunt Mobile Pet Services. All the hosts received theory input as well as hands-on practical work and feedback on the day has been very positive. We will certainly be repeating the training in a few months for both our other existing hosts and our new recruits. This is just one of the ways we take special care of our Barking Mad guest dogs.
Host Christmas Party
Earlier this month we had a lovely afternoon at Close House golf club for our Christmas host get-together. Craig Harvey, Executive Chef, prepared a delicious, festive afternoon tea for us and we were very well looked after by the floor staff. It was nice to be able to offer something special to my team of hosts as a thank you for taking such good care of your dogs throughout 2015.
The Barking Mad team at Newcastle and Tyne Valley wish you a very Happy Christmas and all good things in 2016. Here's guest dog, Penelope, to get us in the festive mood - many thanks to her owners for their kind permission to use her photo.
Our New Facebook Page
Have you had a look at the Facebook page for Barking Mad Newcastle and Tyne Valley? If not, you can find it here! Jackie Nichol found it and she kindly "liked and shared" the page and our post featuring the Barking Mad goody bag. She was selected as our prize draw winner and took delivery of her Barking Mad bag filled with goodies for her and friend, Barney, the Westie.
Our super-capacious bags are issued at our registration appointments when we meet you and your dog for the first time. They're great for avoiding bag charges at the supermarket as well as packing up all your dogs belongings when they go on holiday.
Our hosts are special people and we know that our customers agree. Recently, we had the pleasure of passing on a bouquet and bottle of bubbly to hosts, Carole and Fred, from one particularly grateful customer. She needed care at short notice for her her two Great Danes; not only did Carole and Fred welcome them but when our customer's removal van didn't turn up they happily extended their stay by two extra days. Aren't they just brilliant?!
Our photo was taken at Lintzford Garden Centre where we were had a host recruitment coffee morning. Carole and Fred kindly came along to chat with people interested in hosting. If you'd like to look after friendly dogs whilst their owners are away you don't have to wait for our next coffee morning! We welcome people with up to two sociable, tolerant dogs as well as people without dogs but some previous experience of caring for them. Please call Carrie on 0191 4147264 for an informal chat.
It's hard to believe it now but the beginning of October still felt like Summer. These photos show the fantastic day we had with the Barking Mad stand at the Wet Nose Day event, Newburn Riverside Park, Newcastle.
We recruited a new host from this event. Anne thought dogs had disappeared from her life when her beloved Sheltie died. As a retiree she felt she could not commit to another 15-17 years of dog ownership. She was over-joyed to discover she could care for dogs on a part-time basis and already has two guest dogs booked in with her!
Host Coffee Morning
If you're interested in hosting please come along for a FREE cuppa and cake at our next coffee morning. We're meeting at Lintzford Garden Centre, near Rowlands Gill, NE39 1DG on Wednesday 18th November, 10.30 am - 12.30 pm. Barking Mad owner, Carrie, will be there along with some existing hosts - we're a friendly bunch so please do join us! No need to book, just turn up.
A little while back I promised a photo of the newest members of our team. Here we all are in our first team photo:
(L to R) Helen (Admin Assistant), Ian (Transport Service), Carrie (Owner-Operator)
Many thanks to Paul and Steven at Life Studios, Sunniside who kindly provided the photo for us. Life Studios are known for their captivating shots of newborns and their work has been selected for display in the Maternity Units at the RVI, Newcastle and Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Gateshead.
I first came across them when I spotted a fantastic portrait of Steven's Cocker Spaniel, Winston - it's not just newborns that they photograph beautifully but fur-babies too! You can contact them on 0191 488 9399.
The winners of my Christmas prize draws are:
Shelley Oliver - Shelley wins a free photo shoot at Life Studios for herself and her dog, Coco
Aiden Flett - Aiden wins the children's prize of a box of cuddly toy puppies
Congratulations to them both and a Happy Christmas to you all from myself and Alfie!
This is beautiful Ellie, who has just had her 25th holiday with Barking Mad, Newcastle and Tyne Valley! Ellie is much loved by her two regular host families, Jim & Liz and Jane & Phil, as well as her doggy travel agent, Carrie. We're all looking forward to seeing you again in February, Ellie. xxx
This is the time of year for visiting a Christmas Fair, enjoying seasonal treats and maybe buying some locally-crafted gifts for your family and friends. I've bought some beautiful, Christmas tree ornaments from JuleJules. Jules has a range of gorgeous jewelry and home accessories including these Scotty dog drinks coasters. They are all hand-crafted in fused glass and made in Ponteland.
She will be at Kirkley Hall Christmas Fair this weekend, 15-16th November, 10 am - 4 pm as will I. Come and visit the Barking Mad stand - I've teamed up with Life Studios who took my profile photos earlier in the year.
**You can win a £145 voucher for a pet photography portrait by entering my free prize draw.**
Paul from Life Studios will be there so you can also buy vouchers for a photo shoot as a Christmas present for someone special. As well as pet portraits Life Studios take stunning family portraits and also specialise in photos of newborns.

With over 20 host families available we can cater for:
- energetic dogs

How was your Summer holiday this year? For Barking Mad guests in the Newcastle and Tyne Valley area it was doggy paradise! Here are some of our favourite pics of dogs on holiday enjoying days out in the countryside, at the beach and pottering in the garden whilst staying with our lovely hosts
"The Dream Team" - that's how the Barking Mad team for the North East was described by one local paper and who are we to disagree?! Here I am pictured with my colleagues (left to right) Tracy Johnston (Cleveland, Teesside and Darlington), Sue Seward (Tyne and Wear), Tina Young (Northumberland). Between us we have the North East covered, offering holidays to hundreds of dogs with our dozens of fabulous host families
Special Dogs - Special Care
Here's Archi, an ex-racing greyhound with his host's son, who's loving having an extra dog at home during the Summer holidays. Archi's life on the tracks came to an end when he developed visual problems and had to have his left eye surgically removed. But this didn't stop him finding a permanent, loving home and opportunities for wonderful holidays with Barking Mad. If your dog has special needs talk to us about finding the perfect host to give him or her all the care they need whilst you're away.
Saturday 12th July was a glorious sunny day which I was lucky enough to spend at Corbridge Festival. The music was great and there was a real festival buzz yet it still kept it's local and family-friendly appeal. Our lucky prize winners at this event were:
Fi White of Hexham who won £20 worth of vouchers for the Wood Oven artisan pizzeria in Wylam
Amy Thompson of Washington who won Bear and Bibbi's Barkery Box for Heidi, her Labrador
Richard Brooks from near Alnwick who won the Labrador puppy cuddly toy from Toys R Us
I'm thrilled that several people who I met on the Barking Mad stand have subsequently joined us as host families - they're all dog-mad and can't wait to meet your pooches on their next holiday. Look out for them as I'll be introducing them via my web pages and/or my newsletter in the next few months.
This week I went with Alfie, my own 3 year old Bedlington Terrier, for a photo shoot at Life Studios in Sunniside. I'm delighted with the results and if you'd like a gorgeous pet portrait do get in touch with Paul or Steven using this link http://www.life-studios.com/ or phone 0191 4889399
On Sunday 8th June 2014 I attended the Great North Dog Walk with my colleague Tracy Johnston, Barking Mad rep for Cleveland, Teesside and Darlington. The walk is a Guinness Record breaking charity event and there were approximately 25,000 dogs and their people at this year's event!
With so many people attending, the picnic chairs that we brought along did not get much use. There was a constant flow of adults, children and dogs to the Barking Mad stand from 8.30 am - 4.00 pm. It was lovely to see so many new faces and to meet up with some of our existing hosts and friends.
Courtesy of Matfen Hall hotel in Matfen, Northumberland we were able to give away a voucher for a luxury afternoon tea for two in our free prize draw. This was won by Laverne Elrick of South Shields and she can be seen receiving her voucher from us. For the children there was the opportunity to win a Labrador puppy cuddly toy which now has a new home with Alexandra from Jarrow after she correctly guessed the number of gravy bones in our jar. Thank you to everybody who visited us and I hope to meet up with some of you again soon.
We also ran a "Guess the Number of Gravy Bones in the Jar" competition for the children. Alexandra McLeod of Jarrow was the winner and she is shown here collecting her prize of a Labrador puppy cuddly toy. There were 317 gravy bones and her guess of 314 was by far the closest - well done, Alex!
