At Barking Mad, we are constantly inspired by the passion, kindness and dedication shown by our franchisees. But two members of our network, Julie and Shirley, are taking that passion a step further next March – by heading to Cape Verde not just for a holiday, but to support a charity feeding the islands’ stray dogs and cats.
What makes this trip even more special is that it marks the pair’s first holiday together since they were 17.
A Friendship Spanning Decades
Julie and Shirley have been best friends since their early teens.
“They met at school and have been inseparable ever since,” says Rebecca de Chair, Group Marketing Manager at Barking Mad. “Even when life took them in different directions, they always found their way back to each other.
“Despite all the changes over the years, they’ve always had the kind of friendship that just clicks back into place,” Rebecca added.
From Lifelong Friends to Business Partners
In a lovely twist of fate, their paths aligned once more when they decided to combine their skills and join the Barking Mad family as franchisees.
“Julie and Shirley bring such warmth, enthusiasm and professionalism to the brand,” said Rebecca. “They’re known for their infectious laughter and their commitment to giving dogs the best possible home-from-home experience.”
Working together now means they see each other daily – and according to them, not a day goes by without a proper belly laugh.
“We get on brilliantly,” Julie shared. “Working together just feels right.”
A Long-Awaited Holiday With a Purpose
Though both have enjoyed many family holidays over the years, the pair haven’t had a proper girls’ getaway in decades.
“We’ve talked about it for ages,” Shirley said. “Cape Verde was somewhere we both wanted to explore, and we finally said, ‘Let’s just book it!’”
But for them both, a holiday isn’t complete without dogs being involved.
While researching the islands, she discovered the charity ‘Saving the Beautiful Cats and Dogs of Cape Verde’ (Registered Charity 1200849), which runs weekly feeding trips to support the island’s large stray population.
“When we learned about the scale of need and the amazing work the charity does, we knew we wanted to help,” Julie said.
The charity charges volunteers €20 to join the feeding trip, but each outing costs them around €300 to run – meaning donations and support are vital.
Travelling With Compassion: Charity Baggage & Donations
Thanks to the generosity of TUI, Julie and Shirley have been granted 20kg of extra charity baggage, allowing them to take essential supplies directly to the charity.
The items most needed include:
🩺 Flea, tick & worming medications
🩹 First-aid items – bandages, antiseptic, Metacam/Rheumocam
🐕 Collars, leads, harnesses
🧸 Toys & blankets
They have also created a JustGiving page for anyone who wishes to make a monetary donation toward food, foster care, and medical support.
“We’re incredibly proud of Julie and Shirley for using their holiday to make a real difference,” said Rebecca. “Their compassion truly represents what Barking Mad is all about.”
Temporary Closure While They Volunteer Abroad
Julie and Shirley’s Barking Mad business will be closed from 8–18th March while they are volunteering and travelling. Bookings will resume as normal after they return.
“We can’t wait to hear all about their experience,” added Rebecca. “And we know their story will inspire many across the Barking Mad community. Well done, ladies – you’re true inspirations!”
