Heatstroke in Dogs: Symptoms and What to Do

On a very hot day, Jonesy’s Barking Mad host family made him a den so he could keep cool in the shade, preventing the risk of heatstroke


When the sun comes out, there is nothing better than enjoying the warm weather with your canine best friend. However, it is vital to remember that dogs can quickly overheat and taking suitable precautions can prevent a very distressing and dangerous experience for your pet.  Dogs don’t perspire in the same way as humans and have only a small number of sweat glands, contained mainly in their paw pads. They have to rely on panting to cool themselves down. The RSPCA  advises:

“If dogs are too hot and are unable to reduce their body temperature by panting, they will develop heatstroke which can kill. If a dog is displaying any signs of heatstroke, move them to a cool, shaded area and call a vet immediately.”
